KARACHI:
Lawmakers in the Sindh Assembly engaged in ‘non-parliamentary’ language, making personal attacks on political leaders’ characters, as a Pakistan Muslim League - Nawaz (PML-N) MPA introduced a resolution against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairperson Imran Khan. Interestingly, the resolution was against Imran’s ‘non-parliamentary’ language against political leaders.

PML-N MPA Sorath Thebo, with the support of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), succeeded in adopting a resolution against PTI leader Imran Khan during the noisy session on Tuesday. Resultantly, PTI and MQM members raised fingers on each other.

The session, which started with Deputy Speaker Shehla Raza in chair, witnessed a heated argument between MQM and PTI members when Thebo moved a resolution condemning Imran’s non-parliamentary language against political leaders and misleading the nation on various issues.

The ruling Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) lawmakers, however, abstained from voting when Thebo, amid heated arguments with PTI MPA Khurrum Sher Zaman, read the resolution. “The august house condemns the irresponsible, non-political and misguiding attitude and behaviour of Imran Khan as he is continuously misguiding the nation for the last so many years,” she said.

Personal attacks

She referred to Imran’s statement about the Rs10-billion offer from Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. “He is a liar,” she said. “He always takes U-turns after taking decisions and is famous as U-turn Niazi.”

As a result, PTI MPA Zaman stood up and protested against Thebo’s remarks. “Imran Khan has taken a stand against those who have looted and plundered this country's wealth,” he said. “Is it wrong if he talks on corruption?” Zaman criticised Prime Minister Nawaz for his ‘deal’ with former army chief General Pervez Musharraf and leaving the country after the military coup in 1999.

“How can we call the prime minister a patriotic Pakistan when he holds secret meetings with Indian businessman Sajjan Jindal?” he asked.

Meanwhile, PPP members enjoyed the war of words between the PML-N and PTI members and chose to remain hushed on the issue. On the other hand, MQM members not only supported the resolution but Zafar Kamali of the party went on to comment on the PTI chief. “Imran Khan is the father of an illegitimate girl and he can be disqualified under Article 62 and Article 63 because he is no more ameen and sadiq,” he said.

On these remarks, Dr Seema Zia, Zaman and Samar Ali Khan protested. “We have enough matters to expose the personal life of the members on the other side but we don't want to indulge in this dirty politics,” said Khan, who is also the parliamentary leader of PTI.

Finally, Deputy Speaker Raza requested the members to avoid non-parliamentary language in the House and ordered her staff to expunge the derogatory words used by the MPAs against each other.

Faisal Subzwari, the deputy parliamentary leader of MQM, apologised on behalf of Kamali. “We should not use such words against any political leader,” he said. “I request PTI and other party members to please follow the rules and avoid criticising political leadership.”

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Nisar Ahmed Khuhro said no one will be allowed to speak against political leadership. Before the deputy speaker put the resolution in the House for voting, Pakistan Muslim League-Functional (PML-F) members left the House, leaving PTI, MQM and PML-N's one member, Thebo, on opposition benches. With the help of MQM, Thebo got majority votes as PPP neither supported the resolution nor opposed it. Later, the deputy speaker adjourned the session till Friday.

All that fuss – for nothing

After the session, MQM and PTI members held a meeting and excused each other for using non-parliamentary language.
