Labour Day: Legal reforms urged
Activists call for recognising contribution of women workers
PESHAWAR:
Like elsewhere in the country, International Labour Day was observed in parts of the city on Monday.
Events were held in the city to express solidarity with labourers in the province. Speakers urged the government to reform the labour laws in the province.
At the Peshawar Press Club, an event was held by the non-government organisation (NGO) ‘Da Hawwa Lur’ [Eve’s daughter] where female domestic workers were invited to speak about the labour movement and to pay tribute to women in contributing to the country’s economy.
K-P Assembly Deputy Speaker Dr Meher Taj Roghani stressed on legislative reforms particularly, for home-based workers.
She said that the provincial government was striving to devise laws which would help resolve issues faced by domestic workers at their workplaces.
Asmat Jahan from the Awami Workers Party voiced similar sentiments and called for the due appreciation of women workers.
The NGO’s director of programmes Shawana Shah told The Express Tribune they needed a law for resolving issues which domestic workers face at their workplaces.
“Women are contributing to every sector of the country and it is mandatory that their work be recognised and respected,” she said.
To mark the day, a solidarity walk was organised by the Pakistan Workers Federation (PWF), representing more than 1,200 labour unions in the country. The walk started from PWF’s provincial headquarters and participants marched till Bacha Khan Square.
