LAHORE: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has announced holding a protest-cum-party meeting on May 4 at Minar-e-Pakistan against power outages despite the district administration’s refusal to give clearance for the gathering.

After meeting party representatives, PPP Central Punjab President Qamar Zaman Kaira said the party had completed arrangements to stage the protest. ” The party will hold its meeting whether the government gives permission or not,” he vowed.

To make the public show successful, the PPP leadership has initiated contact drives to mobilise activists. Kaira along with other party leaders met party workers in the Architect Housing Society and directed them to participate in the May 4 protest.

A district administration spokesperson told The Express Tribune the PPP leadership had been informed that Section 144 was imposed on public gatherings at Minar-e-Pakistan. The Lahore deputy commissioner has not yet issued the no-objection certificate for the rally.

At a press conference the other day, Kaira had announced the PPP would hold the meeting to register its protest against frequent power outages. “We would reciprocate in the same manner by holding hand fans as Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif did during the PPP’s rule,” he had said.
