LAHORE: Lahore police have geo-tagged over 5,300 important places throughout Punjab’s capital as part of their policing reforms through information technology. The plan is to tag over 9,000 installations across Lahore.

“Security of sensitive installations has emerged as a new challenge. To meet the challenge in an effective and professional manner, police are geo-tagging the buildings and the task has been assigned to SHOs,” said DIG Operations Dr Haider Ashraf on Sunday.

Android phones have been provided to assigned ‘beat’ officers, who tag a building important from the security point of view. They also compute the details of security arrangements like guards, CCTV cameras, vintage points, metal detectors and walk-through gates.

These details help in security audits of the building. Once a building is geo-tagged, a beat officer visits the premises on a daily basis to check the arrangements and feed details through their phones.

Senior police officers can review the arrangements while sitting in their offices through the Ops Rooms.

The buildings marked on satellites include 1,517 banks, 1,511 schools, 128 hotels, 28 factories, 287 filling stations, 96 hospitals, 196 government offices, 255 markets, 820 worship places, 237 bakeries, 39 parks, 16 towers, 16 wedding halls, 15 government offices, five restaurants and one police station.
