With Pakistan a data-rich country, more data should be released publicly and used effectively.

This was stated by experts at the conclusion of a three-day workshop on data science organised by the Higher Education Commission (HEC).

“We must leverage the opportunities lying in the area of Data Science,” said Planning Commission Member Science and Technology Dr Athar Osama.

While highlighting the significance of Data Science in every field, he said that Pakistan had the potential to be a data-rich country but it needs to make more effective use of the available data and to make more data publically available.

He observed that real challenge the country was facing was to utilise the available data. He stressed the need for assessment of universities’ capability to have data and for collaboration among multiple disciplines to use the available data.

Dr Osama added that the government intends to set up national centres on data science, artificial intelligence, and synthetic biology. Further, he said that the government was highly interested in collecting data to make projects aligned with local requirements.

He further said that the Planning Commission was also considering holding a conference on data science.
