At least eight militants affiliated with the proscribed Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) were killed while another four managed to escape during an intelligence-based operation in Sheikhupura late on Wednesday night, Punjab's Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) said.

Two CTD personnel were also injured in exchange of fire which ensued after law enforcers raided the hideout in Narangmandi area of the district and asked the suspects to surrender, a statement said.

Three kilogramme of explosives, suicide vests, three Kalashnikovs, five handguns and several rounds were also recovered from their possession, according to Radio Pakistan. An investigation has been initiated.

The development came over two weeks after the CTD claimed to have killed at least 10 Jamaatul Ahrar (JuA) terrorists, including Anwarul Haq – the alleged handler of the bomber who carried out the February 16 suicide attack at Lahore’s Mall Road – who was already in the police’s custody.
