Sanghar gears up for today's by-election
More than 138,000 people are registered to vote
HYDERABAD:
After winning the allegiance of Jam Madad Ali, a long-time loyalist of the Pakistan Muslim League-Functional (PML-F) from Sanghar, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) will attempt to infiltrate the former's stronghold in the by-election in the PS-81 constituency today (Thursday).
The seat fell vacant after Jam Madad, who has been elected four times from this constituency since 1993, jumped ship and submitted his resignation in the Sindh Assembly in February.
Sanghar by-elections: Late MPA’s son might carry on his father’s legacy
The constituency has remained with the PML-F since the past many elections. The PPP managed to secure an ephemeral win by a slim margin in the 2013 general elections but the court nullified its candidate, Muhammad Khan Junejo's, election results.
Despite several independent candidates trying their luck, the main battle will be between PPP's Jam Madad and PML-F's Jam Nafees Ali today.
More than 138,000 people -76,261 men and 62,540 women - are registered to vote in the constituency. As many as 122 polling stations have been set up with 195 polling booths for men and 179 for women.
Some 122 presiding officers, 274 assistant presiding officers and 374 polling officers will perform polling duty.
Lg elections: 200 SSU commandos to secure Sanghar
Meanwhile, four SSPs and 21 DSPs will supervise around 3,500 policemen who are being deployed for the election security. Hundreds of Rangers personnel will also be deployed.
