ISLAMABAD:
In what appears to be a targeted attack, a man was gunned down by motorcyclists in broad daylight near a mosque close to Chatta Bakhtawar and the COMSATS campus on Park Road on Friday afternoon.
He, however, was the second man to be killed in the capital on Friday after a policeman was killed during a manhunt for a wanted man early on Friday morning.
Police said that 32-year-old Haji Zaraqat had gone to a mosque on Park Road to offer Friday prayers. However, as soon as he got out of his car, he was attacked by two armed men riding on a motorbike.
He was shot and died on the spot.
While officials investigated the case, Zaraqat’s family said that the attackers could possibly have been sent by a group with whom they had an old enmity.
Officials added that one of the Zaraqat’s brothers was currently in jail in connection with a murder. Moreover, the official said that Zaraqat too had spent some time in jail.
As suggested by the victim’s family, police too believed that a rival group was behind the killing.
However, a post-mortem examination of the body was yet to be carried out when this report was filed on Friday.
Policeman killed
Early on Friday morning, a policeman was killed in the Jhangi Syedan area of Islamabad as a police squad hunted for a man wanted for attempted murder.

Early on Friday morning, police raided a house in Dhok Malyar in Jhangi Syedan where the suspect was believed to be living with his family.
However, officials said that the suspect allegedly fired on the raiding party. ASI Hayat received a bullet to his head and died on the spot. The suspect his brother and father, who allegedly resisted the police, managed to flee.
Noon police later on Friday filed an FIR charging Akhtar with murder, attempted murder and for obstructing a public servant. Apart from Akhtar, four men and a woman were also nominated in the FIR.
Search operation
Islamabad Police along with other security agencies conducted a search operation within the remits of Noon police station on Friday and nabbed nine suspects while recovering a cache of weapons.
Accompanied by Rangers and other security agencies, police searched various parts of Noon including Rehman Town, Jhangi Syedain and its adjacent areas, a police spokesman said on Friday.
