A man allegedly kidnapped and tossed his wife and mother-in-law into the Thal Canal on Thursday after she demanded that he agree to divorce her.
Bhakkar Police told The Express Tribune that Abdus Sattar, the accused, a resident of Yousaf Shah, had developed differences with his wife, Saima, 26, for over a year now.
Saima filed for divorce from Sattar in the Bhakkar Court on April 14.
However, a day before the hearing, the estranged husband kidnapped both with wife and mother-in-law from Layyah.
In a fit of rage, Sattar pushed his wife into the Thal Canal and fled the scene.
Local residents were able to save Saima, but Salma, the mother-in-law, drowned.
Sughra, a neighbour of the deceased, said that the couple lived in a joint family system and Saima urged him to live separately.

In this regard, the wife wanted Sattar to buy a separate home in her name.
She said that this underlying issue was the reason behind their marital problems.
A case has been registered against the accused on the complaint of Ghulam Shabbir, Saima's father at the Saddar Police Station in Bhakkar.
An investigation into the case is under way.
