Speaker National Assembly Ayaz Sadiq has termed the supremacy of the constitution an ultimate destination that guarantees democracy, fundamental rights and security for each and every citizen of Pakistan.
Expressing his views on the eve of 'Constitution Day' being celebrated today (Monday) across the country, he said the sanctity of this document (the Constitution of Pakistan) was immense which must be upheld at any cost.

Sadiq highlighted the historical significance of the day and said, 44-years-ago the representatives of the first democratically elected legislature of Pakistan – united by common purpose and an unwavering resolve – unanimously passed the constitution of the country as a guiding principle to its journey towards a democratic, peaceful and prosperous nation.
The Speaker NA lamented that periodic interventions by undemocratic forces held the constitution in abeyance and retarded the pace of a strong federation and democratic culture.
Such misadventures proved detrimental to the state of security, human rights and development of the country, he added.
Remembering political sacrifices for ensuring the supremacy of the constitution, he said varying democratic forces strived to reinstate the constitution and restored democracy after facing huge challenges. They confronted, Sadiq continued, the tyrannical regimes with resilience and an unrelenting resolve to guard the constitution.
Constitution Day: Rabbani wants people to own democracy
The National Assembly speaker also paid rich tribute to the unsung heroes who, according to him, ceased to exist in history but made efforts to defend the constitution’s sanctity by facing torture, imprisonment and even execution at the hands of autocratic regimes.
This historic day provided an opportunity to reiterate the pledge to protect, preserve and defend each and every word of the 'Constitution of Pakistan' that has united us as a nation to live together with liberty, social justice and equality, Sadiq concluded.
