The third day of the Lahore University of Management Sciences (Lums) Olympiad 2011 featured a large number of competitions.
Several events, including the declamation contest, reached the final round. As many as 16 qualifying teams spoke on a serious and a humorous topic each.
Students participated in an Urdu declamation competition focusing on political and social issues. Event organiser Shahzaib Babree said “Six teams have been short listed in the Urdu contest.
We are hoping to address a lot of important issues.” The judges for the event included former debating champions Salman Butt, Ghulam Muhiyuddin Shah and Usman Leghari.
One of the most popular competitions involved a movie trivia event that included questions regarding Hollywood, Bollywood and Lollywood. Students from Aitchison, Lahore College for Arts and Sciences (Lacas), Pakistan Institute of Fashion Design (PIFD), CPE, PAC, National University of Science and Technology (Nust) and Iqra University participated in the event. One of the organisers, Anum Aftab said “We had a lot of fun with the movie trivia competition. A lot of hardcore movie buffs got the chance to show off their knowledge.”
Olympiad also aimed to enhance students interest in disciplines like mathematics through a contest titled Math Enigma. The event organiser, Basil Ahmad said “Math isn’t just for nerds. It is about the ability to reason and apply common sense to a subject. We have tried to make it fun.” More than 50 delegates participated in the math event. Lahore Grammar School (LGS) student Myra Khan said “it was quite intriguing and harder than she had expected. I learnt a lot.”
A film making competition brought together students in a “Speed filming” and “Music video” competitions. The students had to shoot a screener featuring the Lums campus using certain props in two days. Event in-charge, Areeba Kirmani said “The competition focused on creativity as well as quality.” For music videos, delegates were given a theme of the ‘seven deadly sins’ and asked to shoot a social satire short film. The videos were submitted on March 15 and judged by the Lums Media Arts faculty.
The participants also had a chance to learn more about music, as members of the band Call, Sheraz Uppal and Junaid Khan, conducted a singing workshop. Uppal and Khan told participants to exercise their voice (riaz) and later performed for the crowd. Imran Peerzada conducted a dramatics workshop.
A total of 21 teams won awards for their work in filming and declamation. Director Adil Sher praised winning students from LGS and NUST saying “We saw some innovative work. The way the students fused humor and current issues, like cricket, deserves credit.” Kinnaird College for Women University (KCWU) won the declamation contest and LGS the dramatics competition. Lacas students won the Battle of the Bands competition with Takatak and Death Spell. The Mind Quest round was won by Aitchison, while NUST won the Movie Trivia competition.
The winners were presented awards at the closing ceremony by Asad Farooq, the head of the Lums Law and Policy Department and Olympiad patron Dr Ali Khan.
