Telegram introduces encrypted Voice Calls with emoji activation keys
Voice Calls feature is currently available only in Western Europe
Telegram, a messaging app that offers secure end-to-end encrypted messaging services, has finally introduced well-secured voice call facilities.
“Over the past few months, we’ve worked hard to make sure Telegram calls are the best in terms of quality, speed, and security. The wait is over: today we’re rolling out Voice Calls in Western Europe,” the company announced on Friday, promising to bring the feature to rest of the world ‘very soon’.
The app seems a bit late to introduce the audio call services as majority of popular messaging apps including Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, Viber and others are already offering call features for quite some time.

However, one of the possibilities why Telegram is so late to the party could be its focus on security. It claims that it is extending the end-to-end encryption of Telegram's Secret Chats to its call feature. “Telegram Calls are built upon the time-tested end-to-end encryption of Telegram's Secret Chats.” the company said in a blog.
Unlike other secure services such as Signal, Telegram users will be able to make sure that their call is encrypted by simply comparing four emojis as a key exchange. “To make sure your call is 100% secure, you and your recipient just need to compare four emoji over the phone. No lengthy codes or complicated pictures!”

In an effort to stand out from the crowd of messaging services offering voice calls, Telegram said it is using artificial intelligence to optimise the call quality on an ongoing basis. Basically, Telegram will adjust the quality of the call based on the stability of the connection. “Telegram will adapt and provide excellent sound quality on stable WiFi – or use less data when you walk into a refrigerator with bad reception.”
