Ex-BoG member gets PCB to bend to his will
Gul Zada Khan gets stay-order from court to remain part of board despite completing his tenure
LAHORE:
A member of the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) Board of Governors (BoG) took advantage of the board’s inefficiency to extend his stay as a member of the board despite officially completing his tenure.
Gul Zada Khan was appointed the regional head of Peshawar Region in January 2014 and that also made him a member of the Board of Governors.
The PCB, however, officially inducted him six months later in June 2014 – a fact which Khan used to his advantage in making a mockery out of the cricket board.
Khan’s tenure ended this year in January and as per the laws of the PCB, he was to give up his place in the Board of Governors as well. However, because the PCB appointed him in June, he went to a civil court in Lahore and got a ruling in his favour which allowed him to stay as a member of the Board of Governors till June 2017.
This means that he is entitled to receive the salary and all the benefits of being a member of the BoG without actually doing any work for the cricket board.
Secondly, elections for the Peshawar head post he vacated also cannot take place till Khan completes his term; this means that Peshawar Region will be without a head for six months.
This issue came to light when Asghar Khan, the former president of DCA, Lower Dir, sent a letter to the PCB requesting them to appoint an impartial ad-hoc committee to deal with the day-to-day affairs of Peshawar Region.
However, his request was denied by the PCB who stated that they have been “directed to maintain the status quo in the matter of Mr Gul Zada Khan” by the court who has been granted “an ad interim injunction which restrains PCB from issuing de-notification orders against him”.
Some members of Khan’s opposition party are also claiming that Khan is using his influence as a member of the BOG to get his preferred people elected for the post.
Unfortunately, the PCB cannot do anything about this as Khan exploited the board’s own inefficiency.
