LUMS: 700 register for Olympiad 2011
Battle of the Bands biggest draw on opening day.

The Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) Media Arts and Debates & Recitation at LUMS (DRUMS) organised LUMS Olympiad 2011 which kicked off yesterday. More than 700 students participated in various events and workshops.
The first day of Olympiad 2011, Wednesday, began with registration of delegates and opening sessions of many workshops. This year’s Olympiad is offering workshops in parliamentary debating, music videos, law moot court, recitation, thematic art, photography, dramatics, film making, sketching, mathematics and singing. A Battle of the Bands is also part of the Olympiad.
Chief Guest Yusuf Salahuddin, while speaking at the opening ceremony, said, “The Olympiad is a reflection of our multi-cultured society. Events like this one help preserve our cultural heritage. It is great to see the youth taking interest in the endeavour.”
Dramatics society members from many institutes gathered together to discuss theatre. LUMS students Umair Ashfaq said, “Students are using theatre to highlight social issues prevalent today. Theatre is used to show how society’s ills can be cured.”
Round 1 for the law moot court, movie trivia and battle of bands also took place. Cinema enthusiasts exchanged views on recent releases. Music, however, was the biggest draw of the day, with about 80 people showing up for the Battle of the Bands.
Young musicians performed cover versions of rock songs. Hard rock bands seemed to be the flavour of the day. Breaking Benjamin’s Diary of Jane performed by Meshael Arif was met with loud applause.
Osama Zaman, one of the organisers of the event said that talent was not in short supply. He said the events aims to give many people a platform to perform and for others to learn.
LUMS Olympiad 2011 will continue till March 25.
