Apple is known for offering products that are a lot more innovative than its competitors but come with a steep price. From phones to laptops to cases, if it’s coming from Apple, it will be expensive.

The iconic brand, however, now seems to be reforming its image by offering products that come at a budget, case in point the recently launched iPad that is the cheapest the company has ever offered. Apple users now also have the option of budget smartphones that include the iPhone SE which the company has just updated to offer more storage.

While this may be the beginning of Apple’s new brand image, it is a good time to look back on some of the expensive products that the Cupertino giant has ever offered.

Apple LISA $9,995

LISA was the first mouse-operated desktop computer to have a graphical user interface system with a 5MB hard drive. However, the revolutionary product cost a massive $9,999 in 1985 which would translate to over $24,000 in today’s terms. The exceptionally high price coupled with a relatively low performance and unreliability forced Apple to phase out the product.

Twentieth Anniversary Macintosh $7,499

First released in 1997, the Twentieth Anniversary Macintosh or TAM was a truly unique piece of technology that held all its components in a slim body behind the screen. Considered as a prehistoric ancestor of the modern-day iMac, the computer was significantly more expensive than any other product Apple was offering at the time, coming in at $7,500, which would be about $11,200 today.

However, in a little less than a year, the price got slashed to $1,995 to clear stocks. When the TAM was finally sold out, it was discontinued.

Macintosh Portable $7,300

This was Apple's first portable computer that went on for sale in 1989. Exceptionally heavy by today’s standards, the computer weighed in at around 16lbs, though it didn’t feature external cords which meant users could possibly carry it with them.

Apple’s Macintosh Portable cost $7,300 which would be about $14,300 in today’s terms.

Apple LaserWriter $6,995

Apple’s expensive LaserWriter printer was launched in 1985 and mainly targeted businesses of the time by allowing over a dozen Macintosh users to share the device.

The LaserWriter was also one of the very first laser printers available on the mass-market and helped usher in the desktop publishing revolution. However, the steep price of $6,995 - $16,000 by today’s standards - made it very expensive for individual users.

Apple Watch Edition $17,000

Apple entered the smart wearable market in 2015 with the release of the Apple Watch that cost a modest $349 for the baseline model. However, what’s more interesting is that the device came in a collector’s version called Apple Watch Edition, which was made in 18-karat yellow or rose gold casing and could cost as high as $17,000.

The devise, however, was not able to gain traction among users and as such was trimmed down to a fitness device in the newer version that topped out at $1,300 rather than a style piece.

Mac Pro $20,934.45

This souped up Mac Pro may be the most useful expensive Apple product on the list. With even the most advanced internal specs that the Cuppertino giant can offer, the Mac barely crosses the $20,000 mark and offers a computer capable of handling even the most strenuous tasks.
