RAWALPINDI:
A week-long stalemate between lawyers and police in Gujjar Khan finally ended on Saturday after a compromise was reached between them.
The move came as a strike was observed in the district courts on Saturday.
According to information gathered from Rawalpindi district bar association and the police, the lawyers were up in arms against law enforcers for registering a case against the Gujjar Khan bar president and five other lawyers who had allegedly assaulted a uniformed police officer within court premises last Saturday.
In this regard, the Rawalpindi DBA on Saturday held a convention of lawyers. They demanded that police should immediately cancel the FIR registered against members of their fraternity and transfer SI Muhammad Aslam from Gujjar Khan.
Lawyers have accused the police officer of misbehaving with the father of Asad Umer, president of the Gujjar Khan bar and which later led to the alleged assault on the policeman in the court. The Rawalpindi DBA – led by president Sajjad Akbar Abbasi - decided that unless their demands were met, they would block the Kachari chowk near the district courts next week.
Later, a meeting was held in the chamber of District and Sessions Judge Sheikh Ahmed on Saturday which was attended by City Police Officer Israr Ahmed Abbasi and Lahore High Court Bar Association Rawalpindi President Zaffar Mahmood Mughal. According to the police spokesperson, the issue between the lawyers and Gujar Khan Police had amicably been resolved.
Mughal later confirmed that they had reached an agreement with the police after the latter agreed to retract the FIR. Hence, they would not go ahead with their strike.
