The Walking Dead can easily take the medal for being the most diverse show on television. Its unique range of characters is unmatched, as we saw in the show’s latest episode which featured the introduction of a brand new hijab-wearing character named Nabila (Nadine Marissa).

It's hard to know for certain what Nabila's religion is without the character explicitly stating it.  However, according to The Independent, it's probably that the character is the US drama's first Muslim-American to have appeared in the series thus far.

Nabila appears twice in the latest episode, sharing her screen time with King Ezekiel (Khary Payton) at the Kingdom. Showrunner Scott Gimple, who also wrote the episode, told Yahoo! TV, “I hope we haven’t seen the last of Nabila. I loved what she did. She’s very much emblematic of the Kingdom, of this very strong, very singular spirit, and I was so thrilled with that performance. And it’s a tricky exchange there, also reacting to a tiger that’s out there. I don’t think we’ve seen the last of Nabila.”

Fans of The Walking Dead immediately took to social media to express their joy over the show’s steps towards inclusion. “Shout out to The Walking Dead for introducing a Muslim character,” tweeted a user named Ashington Rave, while another called Alvena said, “The Walking Dead has introduced a Muslim character named Nabila and I’m all for this. Representation is so important, guys!”

Movie Pilot reports that the character's name means ‘noble’, ‘happiness’ or ‘honourable’ in Arabic. Watch Nabila go here:
