LAHORE: Experts emphasised the importance of mathematics and urged universities to develop expertise in the subject as it is essential for emerging fields such as data science.

They were speaking at the third international conference on pure and applied mathematics. It was held by the University of Management and Technology’s (UMT) Centre for Mathematics and Its Applications (CMAP) on Monday.

Keynote speakers from the USA, France, Canada, Romania, Bulgaria, United Kingdom and other countries shared their views with their Pakistani counterparts on a number of topics.

Speaking on the occasion, UMT Rector Dr Hasan Sohaib Murad said mathematics played a key role in dealing with economic, social and political affairs of society.

He said that from interdisciplinary sciences to widely spreading social sciences, mathematicians, who are pioneers of their field, should find out new ways to apply pure and applied mathematics to solve real life problems.

Shedding light on the contributions of great Muslim scientists like Al-Khwarizmi, Al-Kindi, Al-Biruni and others, Dr Hasan said they primarily used mathematics to build a world for us to live in.

He added all students enrolled in universities need to develop expertise in mathematics to make the best use of qualitative and quantitative research methods for better results.

The rector said without math applications, engineering, medical and social sciences as well as computer technology could not lead to new inventions.

“No mobile app, no robot and no medicine can be produced without properly utilising mathematics,” he stressed. He also announced that a research journal would be taken out to conduct in-depth research on emerging issues in the field.
