KARACHI: In order to remove hurdles in the local government system, the Sindh government has empowered union council secretaries to deal with the registration of births, deaths and marriage certificates.

According to sources, the additional responsibilities of an administrator have been taken back from 18 mukhtiarkars and the district officer has been asked to look after the finances of union councils (UC). Orangi Town Administrator Qamar Shaikh has been given the additional charge of a monitoring district officer.

According to the new policy, the fee and fines of various certificates have also been fixed across the board. UC secretaries are now allowed to verify national identity card forms. Shaikh said that the government has appointed a UC secretary in all UCs.
