DG’s appointment: NAB chairman, Interior Ministry issued notices

The petition challenges appointment of Rana Zahid Mehmood as the NAB Punjab director general.

LAHORE:

A division bench of the Lahore High Court (LHC) on Wednesday issued notices to the Interior Ministry and the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) chairman on a petition challenging appointment of Rana Zahid Mehmood as the NAB Punjab director general.

The bench comprising Justice Chaudhry Iftikhar Hussain and Justice Ahmad Farooq Sheikh also issued notices to the Attorney General of Pakistan, the Advocate General, the FIA and the Inspector General of Police for March 24. The bench also issued notices for the same date on an application requesting the court to stop Mehmood from assuming office.

The petition was filed by some of the Canal Motors scam victims. They challenged the investigation in the case and Zahid’s eligibility as the NAB director general.

Advocate Muhammad Azhar Siddique representing the petitioners said that the Mehmood’s contract appointment was in violation of the rules and regulations. He said the appointment should be annulled.

The counsel said that the respondent was removed as an LHC judge following the judgment of the apex court declaring all appointments made by Justice Abdul Hameed Dogar unconstitutional.

He alleged that Mehmood was a close relative of Rana Qaiser Nazir, an accused in Canal Motors case, and was exercising his position to influence the investigation.

He requested the court to declare Mehmood’s appointment unconstitutional and issue orders for the transfer of the Canal Motors case investigation to its original investigating officer, Rana Waqas, who was removed by the DG.
