Punjab University bids farewell to 1,454 graduates
A Korean, an Iranian student also received Phd degrees.

As many as 1,454 degrees, medals and prizes were distributed among graduates at the Punjab University’s 125th convocation on Monday.
A total of 126 PhD, 738 MPhil/MS, 238 master’s, 178 undergraduate degrees and 174 medals were awarded during the ceremony.
Punjab Higher Education Minister Syed Raza Ali Gillani presided over the ceremony organised at the Punjab University Faisal Auditorium and congratulated the degree holders and medal winners.

He said the country was progressing due to the policies adopted by the government but a few elements wanted to spread terror in country. “We are facing them without any fear and we will defeat them,” he vowed.
He said the government was taking initiatives to bring five universities of Punjab in QS rankings with special focus on Punjab University. He believed the leadership of PU Vice-Chancellor Dr Zafar Mueen Nasir and his policies would bring the university in the top 500 universities of the world.
He added it was indicated in the World Economic Forum that Pakistan was eight points better than India in development. “We must serve our country with the passion of patriotism. It was unfortunate that we were widening our gap with our culture and the person who can speak English language is considered a literate.”
He said that there must be a medical college and a 400-bed teaching hospital at the university. He announced that 10 buses would be provided to the varsity on the demand of university administration and he assured his full support for construction of five hostels and flats for teachers and employees.
Punjab University Vice-Chancellor Dr Zafar Mueen Nasir, Chairman Punjab Higher Education Commission Dr Nizamuddin, Registrar Dr Naeem Khan, Controller of Examinations Dr Shahid Munir, deans of various faculties, members of syndicate, heads of institutions, faculty members, people from various walks of life and a large number of degree and medal holders were present at the event.
In his address, Dr Zafar said that it was his top priority to bring PU amongst top 500 universities of the world. He said that he wanted to establish culture of quality research at campus and central point of his policy was merit. He said that he believed in devolution of power so he was empowering deans and heads of institutions. He said that he believed in authority with accountability.
PU Registrar Dr Naeem Khan announced that on the direction of the varsity’s VC, contract lectureship would be offered to students who received gold medals in their master’s after completion of their M Phil and this policy had been revived after 35 years.
During the ceremony, Park Kyo Soun, a Korean student, obtained her PhD degree in History while an Iranian student received her PhD degree in Biological Sciences. A visually-impaired student, Muhammad Ahmad, also received a gold medal in his master’s degree in Pakistan Studies.
