Man allegedly burnt by his in-laws

Police say they are examining the conflicting claims.

MULTAN:

A man was allegedly set on fire by his in-laws for abusing his wife on Wednesday.

Lodhi Colony resident Muhammad Hanif married Parveen three years ago and the couple reportedly argued constantly. Parveen had petitioned for a divorce four times.

On Tuesday evening, Parveen went to her parents’ house after another argument with her husband and said that Hanif had beaten her.

Hanif followed Parveen to her father’s house. Parveen’s parents poured petrol on Hanif and set him on fire.

Hanif sustained burns to more than 75 per cent of his body and is in Nishtar Hospital, where doctors deem him to be in a critical condition.

Dr Zafar Alvi said that Hanif was unlikely to survive. Parveen’s parents told police officials that they feared for their daughter’s life and when Hanif tried to break into their home they told him that they would help their daughter file for a divorce. “He was in a rage and tried to commit suicide by setting himself on fire,” Parveen’s father Altaf said.

Hanif initially told rescue workers that the family had tried to kill him after he demanded that his wife return home. Hanif asked that action be taken against his wife’s family. Police officials have not yet lodged the FIR but Gulghast Area police superintendent Atif said “We are investigating both claims and will file a case once we have clear evidence.”
