FPCCI official seeks European help to revive economy
Calls for easy access to markets, removal of trade hurdles.
KARACHI:
European countries should not provide aid to Pakistan, but should provide trade exemptions and easy access to markets, according to Federation of Pakistan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FPCC) President Senator Haji Ghulam Ali.
He was speaking at the Federation House on Friday, at a ceremony organised to mark the three-year term completion of British Deputy High Commissioner Robert Gibson. Ali said that the western world, particularly European countries, must understand Pakistan’s problems, and help it resolve economic issues to revive the economy.
Ali explained that Pakistan was an important country of South Asia, and its economy had been suffering due to the war against terrorism, while the recent floods in the country had inflicted irreparable losses on the economy.
The FPCCI president lauded the role the British government played in rescue operations, and further said that both countries enjoyed good relations at state and individual levels in the last few decades.
Gibson underlined that solving of Pakistan’s economic problems was necessary to bring the country out of the current situation, caused by the devastating effects of war against terrorism.
“UK is cognisant of the fact that Pakistan is an important country of this region, which is why several UK companies have invested billions of pounds in this economy,” said Gibson. He assured Ali that his country will do its best to help Pakistan in obtaining trade concessions from the European Union.
