ISLAMABAD:
The pandemonium that broke out in the lower house of Parliament on Thursday witnessed Shehryar Afridi, a suspended lawmaker of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), exposing lack of coordination between the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and National Assembly.

According to the poll supervisory authority's website, Afridi, who was elected from the NA-14 Kohat constituency, is still mentioned as suspended.

The ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and opposition lawmakers traded punches after opposition MNAs castigated Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif for making contradictory statements about the businesses and properties in London allegedly owned by his family.

Afridi could be seen in the scuffle between PTI and PML-N lawmakers, who also later appeared on different television talk shows. TV footages also showed a PML-N minister punching Afridi in the face during the rumpus.

PTI moves privilege motion in NA against PML-N lawmakers following pandemonium

The poll authority suspended the PTI leader from taking part in parliamentary proceedings on October 15 for not filing his asset details. He was among the members who did not submit their annual statements of assets and liabilities for the previous year.

According to the ECP, Afridi submitted his details on Friday; however, a notification in this regard is yet to be issued.

Every lawmaker is bound to file a certified statement of assets and liabilities of his own, spouse and dependents to the ECP by September 30 every year.

The ECP makes public names of all such members on October 16 every year and sends a copy of its notification on suspended members to the relevant speakers, or chairman in case of Senate. Initially, this list carries hundreds of names. As soon as a member submits his or her statement, the election commission restores their membership forthwith.

Scuffle breaks out between PTI, PML-N lawmakers in National Assembly

On Thursday, the rumpus began when Opposition Leader Khursheed Shah took the floor on a point of order and urged the National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq to take up the privilege motion moved jointly by the PPP and PTI against PM Nawaz before all else.

Shah’s address was followed by PTI’s parliamentary leader Shah Mehmood Qureshi’s charged speech in which he pressed the speaker to take up opposition’s privilege motion against the prime minister for his allegedly contradictory statements on the Panama Papers issue.
