LAHORE:

In a meeting held late on Tuesday, the Punjab Young Doctors’ Association (YDA) decided to continue its protests from OPD centres set on the roadsides till Saturday.

According to YDA officials, the organisation will extend its strike to the wards this week. YDA officials, however, said that they for now were not going to extend their strike to the emergency wards.

YDA’s Lahore General Hospital (LHG) unit president Rai Ahmed said that the YDA’s ultimatum on Tuesday was a signal that the organisation would be upping the ante on the government.

He said that so far the committee set up by the government being headed by Dr Javed Akram had provided an effective go-between. Akram said that the health secretary had expressed sympathy for responded to doctors’ requests but had said that the government did not have the funds to grant the salary raises.

Rai said that the doctors’ were pushing for speaking directly with Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif.
