A teenage Muslim girl who claimed to have been shoved in front of a train in Vienna for sporting a headscarf has had her assertion challenged after police perused CCTV footage.

The girl, whose parents are originally from Turkey, was identified only as Sinem. She claimed on the internet that she had been pushed onto the tracks of the Wien-Döbling station by a man who called her a "terrorist", but was saved by another and taken to hospital for minor injuries. Sinem added that her parents had filed a criminal complaint after hearing what had happened.

But after inspecting CCTV footage, Vienna police spokesperson Irina Steirer said officials had found no trace of the incident, The Local reported. “At the time when the incident is alleged to have occurred nothing can be seen on the records,” she said. “Both the alleged victim and the accused are captured on CCTV, but nothing ever happens and they are both simply seen getting on the train.”

She said police were now looking into charging the girl for airing a false claim or slander. The girl's assertion garnered widespread media attention in Austria after the nation's minister for foreign affairs and integration demanded public servants to be proscribed from donning headscarves.
