AIOU programmes: PhD-level admissions to start from Feb 1

Varsity planning to introduce nine new degree-level programmes

The Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) will open admissions for PhD programmes for the spring 2017 semester in various disciplines from February 1.

According to a press release issued on Sunday, the admissions would be offered in about 70 programmes.

The admission programme, approved by AIOU Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Shahid Siddiqui, includes nine new degree-level programmes from B.Ed to PhD.

Dr Siddiqui said that the programme had been made in order to expand the scope of studies keeping in view latest educational trends and market requirements.

Additionally, AIOU would be offering fresh PhD programmes in management sciences in addition to a one-year postgraduate diploma in Criminology and Population Development.


Two master-level programs in Environment Science and Botany are also being introduced. The varsity already offers Master-level courses in 19 disciplines including mass communication, TV production, MEd (one year), physics, chemistry, mathematics, history and sociology.

BS-level programmes in statistics, mathematics and physics will also be offered.

Around five professional and functional certificate courses will also be offered in the coming semester in various disciplines including librarianship, agriculture, French online and short-term educational programmes. AIOU is also planning to introduce a fresh BEd programme in the upcoming semester, in accordance with the road-map provided by the Higher Education Commission (HEC).

To facilitate the admission process, Dr Siddiqui has directed the admission department to ensure that admission forms are widely available. He also advised all regional directors to set up a special desk at their offices to guide students.
