NAP implementation: Punjab resolves to intensify crackdowns
Apex committee meeting decides to continue operations against terrorism financiers
LAHORE:
Punjab’s top civil and military leadership has decided to intensify the ongoing operations under the National Action Plan against terrorism to root out extremism, sectarianism and fanaticism.
On Thursday, the provincial apex committee met for about four hours and resolved to continue indiscriminate crackdowns against those providing financial assistance to terrorists and their facilitators while closing down their all sources of income.
The civil and military leaders also decided to adopt a zero-tolerance policy against those involved in publication and distribution of hate literature while strictly ensuring the ban against provocative speeches under the amplifier act.
A statement issued by the CM House said matters regarding the spread of violence-inciting material were discussed in detail during the apex committee meeting. Progress on steps taken to eliminate extremism in the province under NAP was also reviewed.
The meeting was presided over by Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif while National Security Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Nasser Janjua, Lahore Corps Commander Lt Gen Sadiq Ali, Rangers Punjab Director-General Maj Gen Umar Farooque Barki, General Officer Commanding 10 Division Maj Gen Sardar Tariq Aman, Punjab police chief Mushtaq Ahmed Sukhera, Chief Secretary Capt (retd) Zahid Saeed, Home Secretary Maj (retd) Azam Suleman Khan, National Security Division Secretary Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui and senior military and civil officers also attended the meeting.
The participants vowed to continue strict actions against those involved in spreading extremism through social media while appreciating the operations carried out by the Punjab government and law enforcement agencies against terrorists and their facilitators.
CM Shehbaz informed the participants the process of geo-tagging of seminaries, mosques and worship places had been completed and all resources were being utilised to eliminate terrorism. “The war against terrorism will continue till the elimination of the last terrorist,” he said, adding a number of important steps were taken under NAP that yielded substantial results.
The chief minister said Punjab was the first province where ‘Safe City Project’ had become operational and use of modern technology was proving helpful in the fight against terrorism.
“Our survival lies in the elimination of terrorism and the whole nation is united to achieve this objective,” Shehbaz was quoted as saying the statement. “The decisions of military and civilian leadership have yielded positive results and incidents of terrorism and sectarianism have decreased considerably.”
“We are fighting the war against terrorism through unity, solidarity and harmony and winning the war against terrorism,” he added, hoping that Pakistan would achieve victory and the country would be purged of the menace of extremism forever.
Earlier, the Lahore corps commander had met CM Shehbaz Sharif to discuss matters of mutual interest and steps being taken in connection with NAP.
During the meeting, Shehbaz paid rich tributes to the sacrifices of army officers in the war against terrorism. “Pakistan has written a new history of valour and bravery through memorable sacrifices for the elimination the scourge of terrorism,” he was quoted as saying in a statement issued by CM Office. “The entire nation is proud of the sacrifices of the martyrs.”
