PU VC outlines seven points to raise university’s standard
Dr Nasar points out that key performance indicators (KPIs) will be developed to monitor performance
LAHORE:
The newly-appointed Punjab University Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Zafar Mueen Nasar has outlined a seven-point policy guideline to bring the varsity at par with top world universities. A special focus will be on merit, academic audit and decentralisation.
The VC was chairing a high-level meeting of deans of all faculties at the committee room of the vice chancellor’s office on Wednesday. Deans of faculties, Academic Staff Association president Prof Dr Sajid Rashid and others dignitaries were present on the occasion. Addressing the meeting, Dr Nasar said he wanted the Punjab University to achieve international recognition, enhanced productivity and to make a significant contribution to the national economy.
Presenting his seven-point plan to run the varsity’s affairs, he emphasised that merit would be implemented and transparency would be ensured in all the decisions at PU. The administration would focus on the decentralisation of power and academic units would be able to take decisions.
Those to be given responsibilities would also be answerable for their actions, the VC remarked. He also highlighted that performance-based incentives would be provided to teachers and employees.
Dr Nasar pointed out that key performance indicators (KPIs) would be developed for monitoring performance which would be communicated to all the units. In order to improve productivity, he said that under the supervision of the VC, assessment surveys would be conducted at the end of every academic year to assess the performance of each academic unit.
While discussing the agenda, the vice chancellor directed all the deans to draft a strategic plan to advance this mission within a month.
He said that hierarchy would be followed and applications would be entertained through proper channels. He added the administration would empower deans and bypassing their offices or those of heads of departments would not be tolerated.
He vowed that the administration, finance and academics divisions of the PU would see a marked improvement. The administration would adopt the policy of ‘right man for the right job’, he stressed.
Dr Nasar added that the administration would ensure quality education with an objective to enhance productivity and skills of students.
He said that a quality enhancement cell would be established for this purpose. The VC explained that the administration would also pay special attention to devising a modern and up-to-date curriculum and character building of students. The VC also stressed the need to maintain a peaceful environment on campus and suggested stern action against those who breach security measures.
