Health hazards: Meeting stresses addressing food contamination issues
Urges researchers to develop viable solutions to overcome the problems
FAISALABAD:
Researchers need to devise viable solutions and technology to address the issues of food safety and public health; particularly milk and food contamination.
This was discussed at a meeting of University of Agriculture Faisalabad’s (UAF) Endowment Fund, which was chaired by UAF Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Iqrar Ahmed Khan. The meeting approved 12 research and technology transfer projects.
Khan said that food contamination was posing a serious health hazard to the public and urged the researchers to develop a mechanism to overcome this issue.
He said that the farming community was also facing serious challenges including low profitability, marketing issues, productivity and sustainability in the sector.
The Punjab government is redesigning the Punjab Agri Policy, which will address these issues and ensure sustainability of the sector, said the vice chancellor, adding that the university had also developed a catalogue of 101 innovations to uplift the sector.
National Agriculture Education Accreditation Council (NAEAC) Chairman Dr M Ehsan Tasneem also stressed upon the need to develop technology for overcoming contamination in food and milk at mass level.
He urged scientists to make all out efforts to address the problems.
Progressive Farmer Faisal Shah said that we have to put our focus on the small farmers which are facing tremendous problems.
