HYDERABAD: A final-year student of Sindh University allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling fan of her hostel room late Sunday night.

Naila Rind was found hanging from the ceiling fan of her room in the varsity’s Undergraduate Hostel in Jamshoro. The hostel’s administration informed the police about the alleged suicide, police sources told The Express Tribune.

Rind, who was studying in the varsity’s Sindhi Department, had previously bagged the top position in her Masters exam. Her body was first shifted to the Civil Hospital, Hyderabad for postmortem examination and later handed over to the bereaved family.

According to sources at the hostel, she had returned from her hometown of Qambar Shahdadkot on December 31 while the winter vacations were still going on. “She was working on her final year thesis which she had to submit on January 15,” a source said.

Meanwhile, Nisar Ahmed Rind, the deceased brother, rejected the claims of suicide, saying his sister neither faced any problem in her personal life nor she was suffering from any mental illness. "We demand an impartial investigation into her death," he said.

The Sindh University Teachers' Association's president Prof Dr Azhar Ali Shah has demanded a judicial inquiry into the incident. “One important thing to note is that SSP Jamshoro Tariq Wilayat resides in the university-provided accommodation near the vice chancellor's house and therefore investigation report may not be independent and impartial,” Dr Shah said in a statement.

Earlier, the varsity’s vice chancellor, registrar, SSP Jamshoro and other officials visited the spot after students informed them about the incident.
