Owing to less-than-average rainfall in the current winter season, water shortage is expected to impact the wheat crop that is at its second stage of growing. “This is the time when wheat and other crops are at the stage of tillering and shooting and need sufficient water. Unavailability of water can harm the crop’s growth,” said National Agromet Centre Director Dr Azmat Hayat. He advised farmers to manage water availability at this stage. “If they invest at this stage and crops sustains, they will get the fruit.” Hayat said the grain crop does not require huge amounts of water and its production is hence, likely to remain unaffected. Similarly, vegetables also require less water, which can be easily managed by farmers. He expected the dry season to end in the second part of January.
