Infrastructure: 5,500km roads repaired in Punjab
The project was started back in April 2015 to show that the government wasnt only focusing on projects in the capital
LAHORE:
The Punjab government has completed the rehabilitation of 5,500 kilometres of roads in remote areas under the third phase of the rural roads programme. The fourth phase of the project, under which all remaining roads of the province would be repaired, will begin from 15 January.
These figures were shared during a meeting held on Saturday to review the road rehabilitation scheme.
The project was started back in April 2015 by Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif to dispel the impression the government was only focusing on projects in the provincial capital.
The 5,500 kilometres of roads were repaired at a cost of Rs52 billion. Under the project, at least 12-foot-wide durable and carpeted roads will be established throughout the province. The paved roads will be carpeted to improve agriculture-based economy by allowing farmers better access to the market.
At the meeting, CM Shehbaz ordered that no compromise should be made on the standard and quality of the roads. “The use of substandard material will not be allowed in the construction of roads and stern action will be taken against any complaints,” he added.
He said this project was for the benefit of the rural community as unpaved roads made markets difficult to access for farmers, adding to the costs of transport.
