Training camps abroad vital for Pakistan wrestlers: Muhammad Inam
Commonwealth gold medallist feels country can bag more medals if PWF, PSB cooperate
KARACHI:
In order for Pakistan to win some medals in the upcoming regional events, the Pakistan Wrestling Federation (PWF) and the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) need to send players abroad to train, believes 2010 Commonwealth Games gold medallist Muhammad Inam.
Inam, who has enjoyed a stellar 2016 winning gold at the South Asian Games and the Asian Beach Games while finishing as the runner-up at the Commonwealth Wrestling Championship, is looking to carry his momentum into the next year.
For that the 27-year-old is eyeing gold at the Takhti Cup in Iran, which is scheduled to take place in February, followed by the Asian Wrestling Championship and the Islamic Solidarity Games, both scheduled to take place in May.
“I feel it’s been a good year; I’m just happy that I managed to win medals at all three major events for Pakistan,” Inam told The Express Tribune. “It is crucial to train hard. I’m currently training for the Takhti Cup in Iran as winning gold there is my first target. All the top players from the world will be participating there and I would love to win a medal for my country.”
Inam currently trains at the Pakistan Wrestling Club and also competes for WAPDA in local events, however, he believes that the wrestlers in Pakistan are in dire need of training with professionals from other countries.
“We need better practice partners to train with in order to improve and I think Iran can be a much cheaper and useful option since their players compete at the Olympics too,” said Inam. “I know if we can get medals at Takhti Cup it will only increase our chances to bag more medals in the events that follow.”
Inam further added that he has requested the PWF time and again to organise a two-month long training camp abroad for the local wrestlers to improve their games, but neither the federation, nor the PSB have done anything about it.
