Australia beat Pakistan by 39 runs in first Test

Hosts go 1-0 up against visitors in the three-match series

Australia captured Pakistan's last two wickets to win the first day-night test in Brisbane by 39 runs before tea on day five on Monday but the touring side won huge admiration for their dogged fourth innings chase.



Paceman Mitchell Starc proved the game-breaker, ending a stubborn 71-run partnership between Asad Shafiq and Yasir Shah with a searing delivery that dismissed Shafiq for 137.

Yasir Shah was the last Pakistan wicket to fall when he was run out by Steve Smith with a direct hit for 33. Pakistan managed to score 450 in 145 overs, the highest-ever fourth innings score in Australia.




Earlier on day four, Shafiq completed his record ninth ton at the number six position to bring Pakistan closer to the 490-run target.

He was assisted by Mohammad Amir for the 92-run seventh-wicket partnership. Shafiq then accompanied Wahab for a 66-run and in the end Yasir joined him for a 71-run partnership.

Australia take a 1-0 lead in the three-Test series.
