One-window operation against corruption is essential: NAB chief
Seminar held to discuss ways to regulate Pakistan’s construction industry
KARACHI:
A one-window operation for the various regulations of construction projects is a demand long due by builders and developers as a narrowed down process is more likely to contain corruption.
This was stated by the Karachi chapter director-general of National Accountability Bureau (NAB), Lt Col (retd) Sirajul Naeem, during an interactive seminar, titled ‘Transparency and Accountability for Improvement of Construction Industry in Pakistan’, organised by the Association of Builders and Developers (Abad), Karachi, on Thursday.
He said this recommendation is a part of NAB’s study on the subject. “NAB will compile its study on the construction industry and forward it to the Sindh government to formulate and improve regulations and to implement it,” said Naeem.
The seminar was attended by dignitaries from various fields, including government functionaries, builders and developers. NAB, Karachi, DG was the chief guest at the event, while the Anti-Corruption Establishment chairperson Ghulam Qadir Thebo and Federal Investigation Agency, Sindh, director Muhammad Asim Khan also participated in the seminar.
All small and large builders and developers should be made part of Abad so as to ensure proper regulation, said Naeem, appreciating Abad’s initiative of adopting abandoned projects for the benefit of underprivileged people who struggle to arrange shelter for their families.
He highlighted the role of the service delivery departments and said that NAB will take up the matter of water mismanagement in the city due to which the poor are deprived of basic necessities.
NAB will also take up the matter of illegal hydrants and the tanker mafia, said Naeem, adding that Abad should work actively with the public sector and service delivery departments to provide homes to the 12 million underprivileged people of Karachi who are seeking shelter.
