According to police, accused Muhammad Altaf, his father Mushtaq and his uncle Abdul Razzaq, all residents of Vehari, tortured Shumaila and later forced her to consume poison which caused her death.
While speaking to The Express Tribune, Shumaila’s brother Tanveer said the couple married two months ago. He added, “There is a ritual that the head of the family gives cash amount to the girl at the time of marriage.” He said, “Shumaila’s father gave Rs50,000 to her elder daughter on her wedding but could not give the money at the time of Shumaila’s marriage due to poor financial condition.” However, he said Shumaila’s father promised to give the money later.
He pointed out Altaf and his family kept on demanding money from Shumaila and threatened to kill her if she failed to do so. On Tuesday, accused Altaf, his father Mushtaq and his uncle tortured Shumaila and forced her to consume poison. As a result, she died.
Meanwhile, victim’s brother Tanveer and her mother Kausar Bibi appealed the government to provide justice and award exemplary punishment to the accused. They blamed the police of facilitating the accused and not registering an FIR against them.
