Law tightened to curb nuclear material export

ECC amends Export Policy Order, tightens procedures for curbing exports of nuclear material and missile parts.

ISLAMABAD:
The government has further tightened procedures for curbing exports of nuclear material and missile parts in a bid to allay concerns of the international community over proliferation.

The decision was taken during a meeting of the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the cabinet that met under the chairmanship of Finance Minister Dr Abdul Hafeez Shaikh on Tuesday.

The ECC decided to amend the Export Policy Order 2009 and has added a definition that prohibits exports of nuclear material unless explicitly authorised by an officer of the Ministry of Defence.

Pakistan has been under international pressure regarding its nuclear programme following the unearthing of a global proliferation network that was said to be run by its top nuclear scientist Dr AQ Khan.

Like India and Israel, Pakistan is not a signatory of the Non-Proliferation Treaty, which has been ratified by 187 countries, including the five ‘official’ nuclear powers.
