Wheat, Flour Fortification: WFP to extend assistance in AJK

The meeting emphasised that the Food Department take over the project on sustainable basis

Hoping to overcome anaemia among the poor, the World Food Program (WFP) has decided to extend its wheat and flour fortification project in Azad Kashmir (AJK) for another year. The decision was announced on Friday. The project has been extended in collaboration with Micronutrient Initiative. Food Secretary Raja Muhammad Abbas said that the decision had been taken in a high-level meeting between WFP officials, MI Senior Technical Adviser Dr Noor Ahmad, MI Policy officer Dr Masood Abbasi and officials of the food department. The meeting also discussed in detail the sustainability of the project, fortification of wheat and flour to World Health Organisation (WHO) standards and post withdrawal strategy. The meeting emphasised that the Food Department take over the project on sustainable basis. Abbas sought WFP technical cooperation for upgrading a food testing labin Mirpur and setting up two more labs in Rawalakot and Muzaffarabad.
