Plan to revive MMA appears shattered

ISLAMABAD:
A plan by Maulana Fazlur Rehman to revive a broken alliance of six religiopolitical parties appears to have been shattered before making any headway as one of the leading groups has refused to be part of any such settlement.

Officials of the Jamaati- Islami (JI) told The Express Tribune from Lahore on Tuesday they had conveyed to Fazl that they were not ready to make any formal association. Fazlur Rehman called for a meeting of the parties that were part of the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal before it broke down ahead of general elections in 2008. According to a top leader the JI had assured Fazl support for implementing ‘Shariah’ in Pakistan but would never be part of any formal political alliance.
