Registration of four colleges cancelled due to poor performance
Institutions failed to secure 10% in annual examinations for three consecutive years
KARACHI:
The registration of four private colleges in Karachi has been cancelled by the Board of Intermediate Education, Karachi (BIEK), on Friday for securing less than 10% results in the last three annual examinations.
"We conducted an inquiry and made lists of colleges that were performing poorly consecutively, after which we decided to take this step," BIEK examinations controller Imran Khan Chishti told The Express Tribune, adding that the procedure of compiling the list took 90 days after the board announced this year's annual results.

The colleges are Tariq Bin Ziad College in Shah Faisal Colony, Fountain Higher Secondary School in Orangi Town, Indus College and MTI Higher Secondary School. All the institutes were unable to secure even 10% results in the last three years and BIEK has also written letters to the principals of the colleges, informing them that their examination forms will not be accepted by the board for the annual examinations in 2017.
"The board has also written letters to the colleges that have been securing less than 33% for the last few years," said Chishti, adding that if the colleges do not perform better in the upcoming examinations, their registration will also be cancelled. The board has also informed the director-general of colleges and director-general of private institutions about the matter.
"We will accommodate all the students who will be affected by the decision but will not revert our decision of registration, as all such colleges should be punished," said Chishti, adding that they have also asked the colleges to submit their monthly attendance details. The controller also said that they have no idea about the number of students studying at the colleges right now.

Students are supposed to have at least 75% attendance and in order to enforce this rule, a separate section has been formed at BIEK's office to look after the attendance details of all the private and public institutions. The colleges have been instructed to email the attendance details and send a hard copy to the BIEK office. "Those colleges that do not have internet facilities can send hard copy of the attendance," said Chisti, adding that enrolment and examination forms of those colleges that do not send at least two months' attendance records will not be accepted.
