Poor performance: Govt takes action against 99 head teachers

Multiple unions gear up to protest against the govt in the near future

The Punjab government has initiated disciplinary action against 99 head teachers for ‘inefficiency and misconduct’ and sought written replies from them, The Express Tribune learnt on Thursday.

A notification issued by the Punjab School Education Department (SED) Directorate of Public Instruction (SE) said the action had been taken against head teachers who failed to prevent dropout rates of students in Class IX.

The teachers belong to 23 districts of the province and a list of their names has been provided along with the notification.

“The Punjab Chief Minister has approved and initiated an inquiry against 99 head teachers in BPS-19 and 20 under the PEEDA Act 2006,” according to the notification.  Furthermore, the letter reads the inquiry would be conducted by the Directorate of Public Instruction (SE).


The notification further said the teachers faced charges of inefficiency and misconduct for instances in which the dropout rates were 50% and above among students enrolled in Class 9 in 2014. These pupils were to appear in the BISE Secondary School Certificate Examination 2016, but dropped out due to lack of interest.

The notification directed the accused officers to submit their written defence to the department.

The teachers belong to Lahore, Sheikhupura, Nankana Sahib, Gujranwala, Hafizabad, Mandi Bahauddin, Sialkot, Attock, Narowal, Faisalabad, Jhang, Multan, Bahawalnyagar, Rahim Yar Khan, Sahiwal, Okara, Sargodha, Bhakkar, Rawalpindi, DG Khan, Layyah, Muzaffargarh and Chakwal.

The notification further said, “You are directed to submit your defence against the charges levelled against you duly supported by proofs within the prescribed limit of time as given in the above mentioned orders. In case you desire to examine the record or any clarification if required, you may consult the record in the office of the undersigned.”
