LAHORE: People should not confine their daughters to their houses but instead let them utilise their education and knowledge in the real world, said Punjab Governor Rafique Rajwana at the 13th convocation of University of Management and Technology, Lahore (UMT) on Saturday.

Rajwana told the graduating students knowledge was more important than just having a degree. About the quality of education, he said it was essential to maintain the standard.

Punjab School Education Minister Rana Mashhood said education played an important role in the progress of a country and universities were responsible for producing resources for progress. “All those who are graduating today owe a debt of gratitude to UMT and to the nation.”

UMT Rector Dr Hasan Sohaib Murad said the university was a global institute as it had links with top universities of the world. He added UMT had people doing research on textile and agriculture, two important sectors for national economy and they also offered new degree programmes in the said fields.

Murad said 11,000 students were enrolled in more than 160 degree programmes at the varsity. More than 150 foreign-qualified faculty members were rendering their services at the university, he added.

Around 100 research papers had been published from the university in foreign journals in 2016 while the university was publishing six of its own research journals.

At the ceremony, 1,190 students received bachelors, masters, MS/MPhil and PhD degrees with 200 of them from the varsity’s Sialkot campus.
