Gilgit-Baltistain lead championship with 180 points.
KARACHI:
Gilgit-Baltistan Scouts’ (GBS) Hashim Khan won gold in the Slalom event of the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) Ski Championship 2011 taking place in Naltar.
The 26-year-old, finishing in two minutes and nine seconds, collected 100 points while the other GBS skier Abdul Baqi bagged silver with 80 points. Meanwhile, Pakistan Air Force’s (Paf) Liaqat Ali finished with a bronze with 60 points.
The seven teams participating in this championship include Punjab, GBS, Pakistan Army, Alpine Club, Balochistan, Civil Aviation Authority and Paf.
Meanwhile, it also emerged that many local skiers prefer Slalom over the other forms of skiing.
“In Pakistan, most of the skiers enjoy Slalom more than the other formats of alpine skiing,” Paf’s Waseem Abbas told The Express Tribune. “We like the championship since it is dedicated to Slalom competitions.
“Quite often the best skiers make it to the final and the level of competition improves. So we can say that whoever wins slalom gets more appreciation.”
After the first day of the championship, GBS lead with 180 points while Paf are second with 140 points and Army stand third with 90 points.
