Best Model Pakistan 2011

Model Abrar Khan won the Best Model Pakistan contest in 2010.

KARACHI:
Recent trends seem to delineate a path that shows that model-hunts can attract more than just a local audience and inadvertently boost tourism. Extending this notion further, an organisation called Best Model Pakistan (BMP) 2011 has taken a step forward to bring about a unique initiative in Pakistan.

While talking to The Express Tribune, Usman Aman, president and event director of the Best Model Pakistan 2011’s organising committee said, “While travelling abroad and mingling  with people, I [have] realised that many foreigners have misconceptions of my country and fellow Pakistanis and I kept thinking of how I can break the myth. After some research, I realised that the world over, beauty pageants are considered to be the main source for generating foreign exchange and promoting tourism. Hence, I gave it a shot.”

According to the press statement issued by BMP officials,  “BMP is conceptualised as a prestigious model-hunt created to bring people of various communities and cultures from all over Pakistan to converge, to share common values and to foster national and international friendship and understanding.”

The hunt is a pragmatic approach to search for individuals who can become Pakistan’s ambassadors to promote tourism, international goodwill, and culture, and  be competent enough to participate in international contests. The organisation aims to “uplift the image of Pakistan.”

The organisation has been around for almost a decade. Previous contestants on include Asma Zernab in Sarawak, Abrar Khan, who represented Pakistan at the Manhunt International 2010 in Taiwan and Fahad Sher Hussain, who represented the country in the Mister International 2010 contest in Indonesia.

When asked what is expected of the event this year, Aman replied, “[The hunt] encourages and advocates strong awareness and responsibility among the candidates for their care and help to protect the environment and wildlife to empower basic social and biological rights.”

The event organiser also adds that this year the contest will bring to the forefront the plight of the blind dolphins of the Indus  and also try to draw attention to the tourism industry of the country.
