Haitians demand resignation of President

Express May 11, 2010

KARACHI: Thousands of demonstrators gathered at the ruins of Port Au Prince demanding the resignation of President Rene Preval.

The crowd walked from their gathering point to the Presidential Palace. The atmosphere was calm at first but turned violent when protesters encountered the police.

The election commission and it's records were destroyed in the earthquake.  Meanwhile President Preval has been granted an extra 96 days in office by Parliament.

The protestors and opposition want the elections to be held on time and fear that Preval is using the disaster to cling to power.
