The Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda), while responding to a news story published in The Express Tribune titled “PSO’s receivables swell to Rs251.7 billion”, has said that the delay in payments to PSO does not relate to Wapda. “It is incorrect that Wapda owes Rs131 billion to PSO,” its spokesperson said in a statement. Following the bifurcation of Wapda’s power wing in 2007, it only deals with the construction of dams and hydroelectric power projects, and operation and maintenance of existing hydel power stations, the spokesperson says. “Now, all other matters from electricity generation to distribution are handled by various public sector companies such as power generation companies (Gencos), National Transmission and Despatch Company and distribution companies.” Hence, the spokesperson says, the non-payment to PSO relates to Gencos which are functioning independently and Wapda has no relationship with them.
