Woman’s kidney removed without consent
Patient went in to have stones removed, but left without the affected organ
RAWALPINDI:
A woman went to a private hospital to get kidney stones removed, but left the facility without the organ altogether.
Abdul Wahab told Banni police that his mother was taken to a doctor running a private hospital on Saidpur Road where her left kidney was removed. Based on Abdul Wahab’s complaint, the police raided the Pak-Khaleej Medical Centre to arrest Dr Fazal Ellahi, who operated on 45-year-old Fahmida Bibi. However, the doctor had gone underground and the law enforcers arrested Siddique, a dispenser at the clinic.
Missing children and missing pieces
A local resident said the cops spent about three hours waiting for Dr Ellahi to appear at the clinic, but he never turned up. A case was yet to be registered on Wahab’s complaint. Investigators reportedly sent the matter to the city police officer for his legal opinion.
Later in the day, family members and relatives of Fahmida held a demonstration outside the Banni police station by blocking Asghar Mall Road. They dispersed after assurances from the Rawal Town SP Muhammad Iqbal.
According to the complainant, he brought his mother to the clinic of Dr Ellahi on November 3 with a stone in her left kidney. The doctor assured that the stone would safely be removed. Wahab added the doctor carried out necessary tests before the operation. The son claimed that Dr Ellahi gave his mother a clean bill of health after the operation, saying she was in good condition.
Illegal organ transplant market thrives in Pakistan
Wahab recalled that his mother started bleeding sometime after the operation. The doctor again took her to the operation theater and remained busy for about two-and-a-half hours. When the doctor came out the operating room, he told the family he removed Fahmida’s left kidney.
