Japan invited to invest in special zones

Zardari invites Japanese investors and giant business houses to avail investment opportunities in the SEZ.

KARACHI:
President Asif Ali Zardari on Tuesday invited Japanese investors and giant business houses to avail investment opportunities in the Special Economic Zones (SEZ) established exclusively for Japanese investors in Pakistan, according to a press release.

The president said this at a luncheon hosted by the Japan-Pakistan Business Cooperation Committee (JPBCC) in Tokyo, in a bid to strengthen business relations between the two countries.

The geo-strategic location of Pakistan in the neighbourhood of the mega markets of China, India, energy-rich Central Asia, West Asia and the affluent Gulf region, makes it a hub for exports to these regions, he said.

The president called upon Japanese investors to assist and cooperate in rejuvenating Pakistan’s economy through individual contribution, joint ventures or consortia.

He emphasised the role of the private sector in national development and said the sector holds the key to development while the government must provide facilities and incentives to create a business-friendly environment.

Zardari assured an investor-friendly environment by offering lucrative incentives and foolproof security to safeguard Japanese investments.

He said that the government was busy in bringing structural reforms for fiscal discipline, transparency, improved governance and widening of the tax net, adding that the government is eliminating subsidies, containing fiscal deficit and the level of inflation.

The government is committed to supporting the agriculture sector, patronage of industry and trade, human resource and skill development besides an integrated energy programme, public-private partnership and liberal and pro-investor policies.

“Pakistan is battling with an energy deficit, which is also an opportunity for foreign investments. Coal deposits stand at 180 billion tons in Sindh, which also provides tremendous potential of wind energy,” he said.
