Woman claims son picked up from airport

KARACHI:
The mother of a Karachi-based businessperson filed a petition in the Sindh High Court on Monday against the alleged abduction of her son by the law-enforcement agencies from Karachi airport last week.

Petitioner Tahira Begum stated that her son Saleem Shahzad was going to Lahore via an Air Blue airlines flight to meet his family on May 4 when law-enforcement officials whisked him away from the airport’s departure lounge without providing details of any charge. She said that Saleem informed his elder brother Khurrum about his arrest by the LEA personnel on his mobile phone.

She added that applications were forwarded to the chief justices of the Supreme Court and Sindh High Court, Capital City Police Officer and Corps Commander and after a delay of two days the FIR was registered by the police. Their counsel Khalid Khan Arshi, who filed the petition in the SHC, submitted that closed-circuit cameras at the airport security’s disposal could have easily traced the people involved in the kidnapping of Saleem Shahzad but no action had so far been taken by the police.

He said that neither had any criminal case been registered against the detainee nor were any criminal proceedings pending against his client before any court of law. The petitioner asked the court to declare her son’s detention as unlawful, while blaming government agencies.
